Scholarship Success Stories
In 2018, the Escondido High School scholarship award recipient was a young lady who was in the AVID program. To save money for her dream, she worked every weekend cleaning hotel rooms her junior and senior years, quitting the week before starting at UC Davis where she achieved a BS in Environmental Science in 2022. Her Rising Star award was used to help pay for many of the incidental fees and expenses not covered by her UC grants.
In 2021, a Rising Star scholarship award went to a young lady who had received a ‘full ride’ to Columbia. She is from a struggling single parent family. Her Rising Star award helped her buy winter clothes and pay for her plane ticket to New York.
In 2022, a Rising Star recipient, who had worked full time during her senior year to support herself and her younger brother, chose to become an EMT. Her scholarship helped pay for her first semester at Palomar community college.
Another 2022 scholarship award recipient had received a full scholarship to Notre Dame. She used her Rising Star award to pay for her plane ticket to Chicago.
Our Rising Stars Nomination And Scholarship Awards Process
$750-$2,000
Two weeks before each breakfast meeting, the teachers at each of the seven participating high schools nominate their most outstanding student.
At each meeting the nominating teacher tells us about their student’s accomplishments, usually under challenging circumstances and then the student shares with us their story and their plans for the future.
After the last of the five breakfast meetings, in April, the scholarship selection committee meets and awards scholarships. Last year, there were 18 awards given, ranging from $750 – $2,000.
